Question: I know the chicken pox vaccine issue has been discussed previously, but wouldanyone let me know of known problems with getting the vaccine. I'm intendingto vaccinate my three kids, including one PDD/autism, as I think this housewould be horrific if they got the chicken pox all together. On the otherhand, if someone is aware of a risk/danger, I'll proceed slowly. Can anyone give me some suggestions???
Answer: If you suspect your child has any problems with his immune system Iwould not recommend this vaccination. My son now age six has had reactions to all his childhood shots. When Isay reactions I do not mean life threatening hospitalization typeproblems but he ALWAYS showed fevers after his shots. After his DPTbooster at age five I clearly saw regression on his part. I told hisdoctor I suspected the shots caused this and I was laughed at. My son also has an abnormal EEG which showed spike and wave activity inthe temporal lobes(Language). He was considered to have maybe a variantof LKS so steroids(Prednisone) was the next line of treatment. In orderto have the steroids perscribed he had to have the new chicken pox shotbecause he had never had them and it would be dangerous if he caughtthem while on steroids(because they suppress the immune system). I didnot want to give him the shot because of all his reactions but I didwant to try the steroids if they could help him in anyway. So weRELUCTANTLY gave in to him getting this shot. A few days went by and myhusband and I said no fever; well maybe we are wrong about thevaccinations theory. On day 20 after his shot he woke up crying with avery high fever(104). At first we didn't make the connection but as theday wore on I wondered if maybe the shot had anything to do with this soI looked up the incubation period for chicken pox and to my amazement itis 17 to 21 days. He was lethargic amd had the fever just like all hisother shots. When we were in the pedi's doctors office we had mentionedagain this reaction to vaccinatations(remember he laughed at us aboutthe DPT.) This time he figured he would show us we were wrong about thefever reaction once and for all. He went to get the information put outby the people who make this vaccine and TO HIS AMAZEMENT we were right,It said in the literature that if there was to be an adverse reaction itwould be seen from day 15 to 22!!! He doesn't laugh at us anymore.
