Question: Can anybody enlighten me on - 'Senile Dementia' ;(To my little knowledge, it has something to do withmemory when one becomes older) ? Any help for me??? Or can anyone give me some suggestions???
Answer: There are 350+ causes of dementia currently known. The most familiar isAlzheimer's Disease. If someone you know appears to have memorydifficulties they should be thoroughly evaluated by appropriatephysicians, as some causes of dementia are treatable. It is neithernormal nor inevitable that we lose our memories as we age. The majorityof seniors do not experience serious memory loss. Senile dementia is an old term for the type of dementia thatoccurs in elderly people. As it turns out, it is the same disorderthat causes Alzheimer's disease, which was considered pre-seniledementia. In other words, it was thought that dementia was a normalpart of aging and only a surprize when it happened in young people. There are actually several different types of dementia, but most ofwhat is called senile dementia is also referred to as senile dementiaof the Alzheimer type As far as I know, there is no true entity called Senile Dimentia - itis an old stereotypical belief that as a person aged, they began to havedecreased mental capacity and/or memory. Senile dementia is now calledAlzheimer's disease. Any sort of dimentia/momory problems in the elderlyis considered abnormal and a disease process. Studies show that it is notuntil well into their 80's that eldery people begin to show a demonstabledecrease in mental function, and that decrease is quite small.
