Question: I would like to ask some questions about Reagan's illness ( Ronald Reagan and Alzheimers) which i hope someone can answer: 1. Will the Alzheimers eventually kill him or will he die from somethingelse? 2. what exactly can and cant he remember about his past now? 3. Whatwill happen in the next few months and years as the disease progresses?
Answer: As the only person on this website who boths knows something aboutAlzheimer's and knows the former president and his family I will attempt toanswer, again: 1. The Alzheimer's could eventually kill him but it is more likely that he willdie from something else complicted by the Alzheimer's first.2. From first hand experience he rarely recognizes anyone but Nancy anymorealthough there are rare flashes when he seems to be recognizing someone but youcannot really be sure. He often remembers events from long ago but notsomething that happened yesterday. That is a hallmark of the disease.3. Many things could happen. He could exhibit some violent tendencies (thankgod, so far he hasn't); he will fade away faster; incontinence; just think ofeverything horrible that happens to nursing home patients only tenfold andwithout memory. That's what eventually happens to victims of AD.
