Question: I have had a long history of Alzheimers in my family, what can i do to prevent the same from happening to me? Everyone on my mothers side of the family has developed alzheimers and everytime the family members are getting it at a younger age, i am very worried that the same could happen to me. I've heard there are a few things that can prevent the progression of the disease but have nothing factual to go off of. Got any suggestions?
Answer: unfortunately, simply "being religious" is not going to be enough to help you with this. I understand, b/c I am in the same serious situation as you, and do not want to become like my relatives. Through my research and speaking with medical professionals, you need to keep you brain extremely active-our society today keeps our brains lazy, and for people like us who have this genetic "plague" that's not good-you need to memorize people's phone numbers, not just program them into your cell phone, write out your day's activities and schedule, don't automatically program them into your pda or excel file. Read constantly, and then after you are done, jot down the main points, ideas, and thoughts that you have. They all also said to keep a journal, and constantly through life go through events, people, and names, no matter how big or small, as you are driving or working out. If you hit something you can't remember, just count to ten, and try again, write it down, and force yourself to go back to it later over and over until you remember. don't google things or people you don't remember, force yourself to work at it. At times it's frustrating ,but if you're as committed as it seems, believe me, build these habits up now.
