Elderly Dementia

Question:
Is force feeding and large amount of food pushed into an elderly with dementia acceptable?

My mother elderly, frail, with dementia will tighten mouth to show she doesn't want anymore food. What is called abuse? spied on aid who was caring for mom.

Can anyone give me some suggestions???

Answer: if she will not open her mouth and someone forces her mouth open that is called elder abuse..and the authorities take elder abuse serious...if your mom is at a nursing facility i would make an appointment to see the director of nursing and administrator and if she is at home with help then talk with the directors of the agency providing care

If she doesn't want anymore food, the aid should not force it on her. How did the aid "push" it into her? If your mother didn't open her mouth and let the aid put it in there, then it could be considered assault. If you think that the aid has done this, report them to the board. An aid has a license, too.

This is absolutely elder abuse. You must act on your Mothers behalf ( as she can't) and put a stop to this. Go to the top if you have to but don't quit until you have put a stop to this unacceptable situation. If for some reason she won't or can't eat at all, it would be up to a Doctor to take the necessary and humane steps.
