Dementia Praecox

Question:
I want to know about Dementia PraecoxDoes anyone know if dementia praecox is the same as schizophrenia and what thetreatment was in 1920 to 1930. can anyone give me some suggestions or share with me some knowledge???Ive googled so much but find not much useful things to catch. I'm very inneed of this information so help me???

Answer: 1896.Kraepelin grouped catatonia, hebephrenia and paranoia togetheras a degenerative disease and used the name of DEMENTIA PRAECOX. Heemphasised the chronic deteriorating course, (he also identified patientssuffering from Manic depressive psychosis, these patients experiencedperiods of illness separated by almost complete remissions.)Kraepelin divided the myriad forms of insanity into two groupings on thebasis of long term course. The first he called manic depressive insanity, pursued a fluctuating course with frequent relapses, but full recoveryafter each. The second, for which he used Morelšs term dementia praecox, was a progressive disease which either pursued a steady downhill course tochronic invalidism or, if improvement did occur, resulted in only partialrecovery. There are however, a group who gain a good recovery. Kraepelin eventuallyfound this in his own patients, and estimated this to be 13%. Does thismean there is a subgroup with better prognosis.

1911.Eugen Bleuler introduced the term SCHIZOPHRENIA.

So loosely speaking dementia praecox and schizophrenia are one and the same. Now days though there are strict diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia.(see DSM IV).

In terms of treatment, I don't know of any effective treatments beingavailable. Treatment I think would have largely consisted of hospitaladmission, improving physical and spiritual wellbeing in the hope thatremission would occur. After the 1930s several treatment options came about (some nowdiscredited) including insulin therapy, ECT.Drugs such as chlorpromazine were not developed and used until the 1950s.
