Question: How do you move an elderly relative with dementia, sever vision issues and depression from one assisted? How do you move an elderly relative with dementia, severe vision issues and depression from one assisted living facility under VA insurance to another state's (Florida) assisted living facility? What do I need to know? Can anyone help me??? I am a caregiver and my extended family is at war over this. what documents/exams/laws do I need to know? Can anyone give me some suggestions???
Answer: Contact the Florida council on aging at the link I have provided. They can help you will all your questions. My thoughts are with you and your family. I cared for my mother the last 5 years of her life, her mind was about the level of a two year old. At this point, it would be more appropriate to place him in a nursing home rather than assisted living because of the dementia and blindness, as he will require more care than assisted living can provide. There are nursing homes that have contracts with the VA (as you know by now, I'm sure) as well as nursing homes on many VA hospital campuses.I would call the nursing homes in your area and talk with admissions counselors to see if any have a VA contract. If they do, that will narrow down the number of facilities you will need to inspect, and make your job easier.
