Question: I hear much about coffee and its benefits. If coffee is good for the cardiovascular system, alzheimers prevention and metabolism, does this stand true ? or coffee that is decaffinated? Or is it primarily the caffine that has the benifits? Can anyone give me some suggestions???
Answer: The health benefits of coffee come mainly from its antioxidant content. Coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the American diet (though this may say more about our poor diet of over-processed food and lack of vegetables than anything else). These nutrients are not lost in the decaffeination process, so in that respect, decaf should be just as good. One word of warning, though. Look for decaf coffee that has been water processed, not chemical process. Some lower quality coffees use trace amounts of carcinogenic chemicals in the decaf process. Though producers claim that no chemical residue remains on the beans, why take that risk? Besides, the water processed decaf coffee tastes better. Coffee without caffeine just isn't coffee. I drink a hell of a lot of the stuff, and although I have a few things wrong with me, my cardio vascular system at the last check was in exceptionally good shape for my age. Don't know if this is just luck, though.
