Question: For years I've been using an aluminium expresso maker. Last night a friendasked why I'm not worried about using it since there is a direct correlationbetween Alzheimers desease and the amount of aluminium in your brain.Should I be worried? What about aluminium cans used for drinks, etc? Can anyone give me some suggestions????
Answer: No. What about aluminium cans used for drinks, etc? No. The latest word is that the aluminum found in the brain tissue ofAlzheimer's patients is associated with contaminants in materialsused to process the tissue. The aluminum cannot be demonstrated inunstained tangles, and *is* present in non-Alzheimer's tissue. Source: (hazy memory of) this year's Neurosciences meeting, or a recentScience report, or both... The only evidence (I know of) that there is a connectionbetween Alzheimer's and aluminum is that autopsies ofAlzheimer's victims showed more aluminum in brain cells thanwas typical. No-one knows at this time whether the aluminum is a cuaseof some of the symptoms, or whether it is the result ofthe disease, i.e. there is some correlation but noknown cause and effect. The guidelines I've been reading all seem to agree that it'sokay to cook in aluminum, but that you shouldn't store foodin it. There have also been suggestions that you shouldn't cookhighly acid foods in aluminum.
