Question: When do you know its (unfortunately) time to place a loved one (Alzheimers) in a nursing home? Still living in a senior living apartment with 24/7 caregivers. Great health other than Alzheimers. Great care, better than nursing homes, but will run out of money for this care in 15 months.
Answer: In your case with professional care givers, it depends on your loved one's health and the money. I agree, when the money runs out (provided you still have enough for prolonged nursing home care), that would be the best time if at all possible. Losing one's independence is the worst part of the situation. Sometimes it depends on the health of and stress upon the caregiver if it is not a professional. Our family put my grandfather in an assisted living facility, mostly for my grandmother's sake. As his primary caregiver, she did not realize just how much his care was taking a toll on her mentally and physically, becoming too much to bear especially as he has gotten worse, despite her healthy lifestyle. The situation for both of them has vastly improved.
